What Carotenoids Actually Do to Your Skin

Most people have heard the word carotenoid. Fewer know what it actually means — and almost no one knows how profoundly it can change the skin over time.

This is the story of the pigment that gives Sea Buckthorn its color, and what happens when that pigment meets your skin.

What Is a Carotenoid?

Carotenoids are a class of natural pigments found in plants, algae, and certain fungi. They're the reason carrots are orange, tomatoes are red, and flamingos are pink. In plants, carotenoids serve as protective compounds — shielding cells from oxidative damage caused by light and environmental stress.

In Sea Buckthorn Berry Oil, carotenoids appear in concentrations among the highest of any botanical source on earth. That extraordinary density is not a coincidence. Sea Buckthorn grows in harsh conditions — full sun exposure, coastal winds, temperature extremes — and produces carotenoids in abundance to protect itself. When we press the oil from the fruit, we capture that protective intelligence and bring it to the skin.

What Carotenoids Do

In skin, carotenoids work on several levels simultaneously — and none of them are quick fixes. This is slow, structural work.

  • They neutralize free radicals. UV exposure, pollution, blue light, and metabolic stress all generate reactive oxygen species — unstable molecules that break down collagen, damage cell membranes, and accelerate visible aging. Carotenoids intercept and neutralize these molecules before they can cause that damage.
  • They support cellular turnover. Beta-carotene, the most abundant carotenoid in Sea Buckthorn Berry Oil, acts as a precursor to Vitamin A activity in the skin. The result is gentle, sustained encouragement of the skin's natural renewal process — without the irritation, peeling, or sensitivity associated with retinoids.
  • They modulate the skin's response to UV exposure. Carotenoids don't block the sun — that's what SPF is for. What they do is reduce the inflammatory cascade that follows UV exposure, which over time is responsible for uneven tone, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and cumulative photodamage.
  • They even out skin tone over time. The cumulative effect of reduced oxidative damage and supported cellular turnover is skin that looks more consistent, more luminous, and more even — not overnight, but durably.

Carotenoids work on a timeline measured in weeks and months. That's not a limitation — that's how lasting skin change actually works.

The Color Is the Proof

Sea Buckthorn Berry Oil is deeply, almost aggressively orange. That color is not cosmetic. It's a direct reflection of carotenoid concentration — the more vivid the oil, the more potent the payload.

In our formulas, the concentrations are calibrated to deliver meaningful activity without tinting the skin. But we think about that orange every time we formulate. It's a reminder of what the oil is doing, even when you can't see it.

Where You'll Find It in the Seven Seas Ritual

Carotenoid activity is at the heart of our Celestial Pure Glow Oil Serum — a dry-touch treatment oil used after toning and before sealing. Sea Buckthorn Berry Oil is the ingredient that gives this step its antioxidant depth and its skin-renewing capability.

In our Cosmic Silk Sealing Serum, Sea Buckthorn Berry Oil appears again in a richer, more occlusive formula — sealing in everything that came before it while continuing to deliver carotenoid protection at the surface.

In the full ritual, carotenoids are working in both the treatment and the seal, every time.

Next up: palmitoleic acid — the fatty acid your skin already knows.
